Judo - From historical combative arts to modern olympic sport
Judo is a martial art that originated from Japan and translates to “the gentle way”. Founded by Dr. Jigoro Kano in 1882, this art has quickly gained popularity all over the world. Judo is an art and sport of protecting ones physical body, maintaining one’s balance, and taking opponent’s balance away.
Judo is also an Olympic sport since 1964. While most judo players practice mainly for the spirit of the sport, the art can help with physical fitness, stress relief, and self-defense. Practicing judo can enhance performances in other sports such as Wrestling and Weightlifting.
