Kung Fu is ideal for all ages and physical conditions. Originally kept and taught within Northern Shaolin temples, it is now offered to the public. Thus, continuing to educate students and advance the public’s general knowledge in the St. Louis area by Senior Instructor Gary Freihaut and Head Instructor Shane Freihaut. Students are taught the animal styles: Tiger, Dragon, Crane, Monkey, Mantis, Cobra, Crab for ground fighting, and Iron Palm for open hand techniques. Each animal moves and thinks differently, which in turn teaches you different things about yourself.
Practiced since medieval times by young and old alike, it is a way of life or a code to live by. The training and meditation keep you physically and mentally fit. Although the phrase Kung Fu means “hard arduous work”, it is considered a soft art with emphasis on relaxed and balanced movements, redirection of force, and blocks that also serve as strikes. The philosophy of Kung Fu teaches that the mind is the strongest of weapons.
Learn the philosophy of living life to the fullest and to respect all life. Learn to respect all life with the SKF creed: to avoid rather than confront, disarm rather than hurt, hurt before you maim, maim before you mutilate, mutilate before you kill. All life is precious and cannot be replaced.
It is not an art where belts or rank are emphasized, but they are awarded as earned. It instills a confidence that encourages students to see the futility of conflict; an ideal class for the rebellious, rambunctious youngster as well as a timid adult.
Beginning students learn the philosophies of Kung Fu, basic blocks and strikes, balance, and respect for others. Students learn in an environment more similar to everyday life than in a classroom or gym. They learn to use what is immediately available to defend themselves, keeping their attacker off-guard and on the defensive. Students are expected to teach their fellow students what they have learned. Uniforms are not required, but loose-fitting everyday attire is recommended.
Children are taught to respect themselves and all those around them. They are shown what to be aware of in their surroundings; aware, not afraid. They are taught when and how to contact police and ambulance services, and how to identify, avoid, and get away from potential threats.
